From the University of Oregon and the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster comes this great website for learning history with interactive maps:

Atlases? Atli?
We'll do a two-fer today with the Atlas theme again. The first is by New Yorker regular, Farley Katz. The other two are covers, also from The New Yorker, the first from 1937 I think, and the other from 2010.

Maps in Calvin & Hobbes 13: Secret code
Here's Hobbes being the cartographer again from the same story arc as last week... and again having issues with map scale, this time at the opposite end of the scale spectrum.

Those are feet
This is an illustration on a plastic shopping bag... and those are the recycle dude's feet. That's right, his feet. Couldn't possibly be anything else. Nope. Just feet.

Corning's glassy-eyed vision of the future
Last year the glass manufacturer Corning put out a video showing their vision of a future saturated with their high-tech glass products. It included a segment on displaying interactive map services on glass. An associate named Jim reminded me of it so I'm posting the bit that has to do with maps:
Here's the full video:

Powernap debut
I've been following the fantastical and funny webcomic "Powernap" by Maritza Campos and Bachan. The artistry is ambitiously surreal and the storyline is just fun: In a world where nobody sleeps the one who can't stay awake may be its savior. They're not too far into it, so it could be read from the beginning.

St. Gore two-fer
There is a belief among some that Global Warming is merely an invention of Al Gore's to enrich himself and environmentalist accomplices on the public dime. Refutations of that delusion can be found in many places across the internet, as can an impressive array of examples of it. Here's a pair that feature a globe:

Maps in Calvin & Hobbes 12: Cartographer Hobbes
In this ambitious, diabolical and nefarious plan Hobbes wants to be the cartographer. THAT'S SO COOL! Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes

Secret love
As I said earlier, we're switching the Thursday animated map feature for the Tuesday two-fer to bring you a Valentine special. First, we have this story from the Guardian about a guy who planted a negative-space heart in a grove of trees for his departed wife:
That, of course, is a much better tribute than this one for a far less beloved character (the forest photo at the end of the post, not the Monroe in the grass comic)
Next, given today's theme of love, we have these two Where's Waldo/Carmen Sandiego
themed cartoons (a relationship that's been depicted before in map-related comics):

Animated map puzzle
What if an jigsaw puzzle had an animated image on it, so on each little piece the picture was constantly in motion? A simple version of that can be found here (link to the puzzle map)::

Calvin's adventures as Stupendous Man in Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes are instant comic legend, here, as usual, seen battling the forces of education.

Iconic birdhouse
Here's a fun birdhouse. I am in favor of the wanton re-appropriation and use/abuse of this rapidly-becoming-iconic icon. If I were Google I would be aggressively encouraging the widespread use and abuse of it. Here are some other examples:

History of English
Last month we had a compilation of animations depicting thought experiments from the Open University. This month we have another from the same source and animator depicting the history of English in 10 minutes. The thing starts with a a map of England and scatters maps and globes throughout. Enjoy.

Today we have a tattoo two-fer. Here's a couple people who have indelibly proven their love for their states. Let's hope the Minnesota one is backwards because of a mirror.

Maps in Calvin & Hobbes 10: Scientific exploration
My son does this: scientific experiments using my tools and equipment without thinking ahead as to what sort of damage might be done to the tools, himself or the house. I try to encourage the behavior...usually. Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes:
