This is an Oscar-nominated animated short by Eoin Duffy narrated by George Takai. It's darkly humorous ... or humorously dark... Hey, it's got a spinning globe!

Secret love
As I said earlier, we're switching the Thursday animated map feature for the Tuesday two-fer to bring you a Valentine special. First, we have this story from the Guardian about a guy who planted a negative-space heart in a grove of trees for his departed wife:
That, of course, is a much better tribute than this one for a far less beloved character (the forest photo at the end of the post, not the Monroe in the grass comic)
Next, given today's theme of love, we have these two Where's Waldo/Carmen Sandiego
themed cartoons (a relationship that's been depicted before in map-related comics):

MARIJUANA!
Jack Elrod's Mark Trail discovers marijuana in the forest! ...using an aerial photograph.... which seems like an egregious stretch. I mean, sure, there are certainly people who grow hidden fields of pot in forests and sometimes on federal or state lands. And there are certainly ways to observe such crops via aerial reconnaissance. However the dialog is so ridiculous here and the old-school technique with a magnifying glass. Well, it's Mark Trail. What's one to expect? Actually if I were him I'd be a lot more worried about the gigantic bird that's about to attack the buildings he's in.

Tree win... or is it?
Here's an interesting pattern created from a clear cut... It's kinda sad, although that's a deciduous tree shape cut into an obviously conifer forest. One could almost imagine that it's a very, very cruel act of vandalism by the deciduous tree forces upon the conifer tree community.
You gotta wonder whether the trees that were chopped down to make the pattern above were used to make this woodpile:

You are bear
James Stevenson got this cartoon published in The New Yorker in June of 1990. I'm almost wondering why this is only a "You are here" gag rather than also a "Bear poops in the woods" gag.

Old growth forest map
Ray Jelliffe gives us this cute little tidbit on hiking through old growth forests, something we still have a number of here in Oregon.
