Too many Jennifers

When I was in 1st grade there were three Jennifers in my class.  I was born in the early '70s.  This animated GIF from The Atlantic explains all that:

In the pits

Here's a New Yorker cartoon from Christopher Weyant.  It showed up on the Comics I Don't Understand site because some people don't get it.  And I have to admit,  I'm not sure whether i don't get it or it's not that funny.

Happy Birthday to the UN (guest post)

Hello! Guest contributor Amanda Murphyao here. I've been putting up historical cartoons involving the world or globe on Mondays, but on this day in 1945, the UN Charter came into effect, so this seemed like a good cartoon for today!

This one's also from the Clifford K. Berryman Political Cartoon Collection at the National Archives of the United States:

Happy Bartolomé Day

We're a day late for Columbus Day, but Matthew Inman at The Oatmeal throws in a few maps, or at least some globes, to debunk the heroism of Christopher Columbus... but doesn't just stop at (justifiably) tearing down one person, but rather (again justifiably) builds up another: Bartolomé de las Casas (not to be confused with the subject of that Oscar-winning early 1993 movie "The Mission"

That's not China

Again with the misidentification of South America.  I gotta say, when I started this maps-in-comics blog I had no idea this was so common:

Musical 1950s

Two maps to look for in this video, one in a series commissioned by Vanity Fair to represent a decade in VF's "Decades" series: The earlier map represents the Korean War and the later one shows our newest states. All in the 1950s:

Zero gets a promotion?

Here's one form Mort Walker's Beetle Bailey that's just chock-full of the map.  I'm not interested enough in this comic to follow it long enough to find out whether Zero's promotion is permanent.

No idea where

It's easy to make fun of the monumentally deplorable geography knowledge in the US. But that's not the only place where geography fails can happen:

Apple Maps iOS7 isn't trying to kill you anymore

Last year we had some fun with the fiasco that was Apple Maps. One of the things mentioned to me that I didn't put in a post was the fact that even the icon for Apple Maps shows directions for driving off the middle of a freeway overpass. Now there is a new operating system for Apple mobile devices in the form of iOS7 and they've made at least one improvement:

Thanks for Not Killing Me, Apple Maps!
